Bilateral Meeting of the Director General of AGEPI with the Management of WIPO

The Director General of the State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI), Eugeniu Rusu, had a bilateral meeting with the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Daren Tang, on Sunday, July 17, 2022.

During the meeting, the cooperation priorities between the Republic of Moldova and WIPO were discussed, and at the same time, an exchange of views was carried out on the latest developments in the field of intellectual property (IP) at the international level, and also the challenges that our country is facing at the current stage, including in the context of the war in Ukraine.

The Director General of WIPO expressed his deep appreciation for the way our country is dealing with the current situation on a national and regional level and congratulated the Republic of Moldova on the occasion of obtaining the status of a candidate country for integration into the European Union.

“We are convinced that this new statute requires a lot of involvement from the authorities of the Republic of Moldova, including the IP office, and we show our willingness to support, within the limits of WIPO’s powers, the activities in the reference field”, said Director General of WIPO.

In his turn, the Director of AGEPI thanked the World Intellectual Property Organization and its leaders for the constant support given to the Republic of Moldova in strengthening the IP system and supporting the country’s European path. The Agency’s achievements and priorities for the next period were presented during the AGEPI-WIPO bilateral meeting.

Strengthening the system of protection of copyright and related rights, especially in the context of the new draft law, was another topic discussed by the parties. The law will ensure the transposition of EU Directives and WIPO treaties at the national level.

Also, the representatives of the two organizations discussed the stage of implementation of the joint activities planned for the current year, the implementation by AGEPI of the technological IP administration system intended for national offices (IPAS), the training programs of the WIPO Academy, and also about the regional projects carried out by WIPO for the states of Central and East Central Europe, the Baltic and Mediterranean States.

In the context of the potential in the field of information technologies, the textile industry and the agro-food industry available to our country, the Director General of WIPO invited the Republic of Moldova to use the tools developed by the Organization he leads, among which the WIPO Guide in the field of IP for Mobile Apps Developers, Light Industry Women Support Program, etc.

At the end of the meeting, Director General Tang conveyed sincere congratulations to AGEPI employees and the entire IP community in the Republic of Moldova on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the founding of the State Agency on Intellectual Property, which will be celebrated on September 8, 2022, and assured the Moldovan delegation of WIPO’s commitment to be with AGEPI at the expected events.

Following the discussions at the AGEPI and WIPO management level meeting, the representatives of the Agency had a working meeting with the Division for Transition and Developed Countries, led by Director Habip Asan. The parties addressed the technical and organizational aspects of implementing the Republic of Moldova - WIPO joint activities planned for the current year and highlighted the main areas of cooperation for the next period.

The AGEPI delegation, headed by Eugeniu Rusu, is in Geneva to participate in the works of the 63rd Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO, which is being held from July 14 to 22, in Geneva, Switzerland. Beyond the consolidated agenda of the WIPO Assemblies, the AGEPI delegation has planned a series of bilateral meetings with the representatives of the various WIPO units, and also with the delegations of the member states present at the
