Romania Supports the Republic of Moldova in Its Course of European Integration in the Field of Intellectual Property

11/01/2023

The State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI) participated from October 31 to November 1, 2023, in the “National Seminar on Intellectual Property and Education”, an event held in Bucharest, Romania, by the Romanian Copyright Office (ORDA) in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the State Office for Inventions and Trademarks (OSIM), the Ministry of Education and the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest.

The meeting was attended by approximately 80 persons, representatives of WIPO, international experts, representatives of government institutions and civil society that carry out activities in the field, as well as the academic environment and lyceum teachers from Romania.

During the seminar, topics of major importance for the promotion and protection of intellectual property in the context of economic development and innovation were discussed. These discussions covered aspects related to the impact of intellectual property on the business environment, technological innovation and value creation. There was also a special focus on how education can contribute to a better understanding of intellectual property, encouraging innovation and creativity among young people. In addition, ways of cooperation between governmental organizations, international organizations and civil society to promote and protect intellectual property rights were explored.

This seminar joins the efforts undertaken by the Romanian Copyright Office, the State Office for Inventions and Trademarks and AGEPI in order to strengthen cooperation in the field of intellectual property and the exchange of experience between the three offices in order to develop a balanced system, capable of promoting and protecting creativity and innovation in the two countries, as well as take over best practices and experiences.

Moreover, in the context of the visit to Bucharest, as well as considering the strategic importance of supporting the Republic of Moldova in its course of integration into the European Union, including by aligning legislation and practices in the field of intellectual property with European standards in order to strengthen interinstitutional relations, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed in this regard between AGEPI, ORDA and OSIM. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding took place on October 31 and aims to establish a platform for joint cooperation activities between the three offices in the field of intellectual property and to provide support for the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union, including through the alignment of national legislation in the field of intellectual property to the relevant European acquis.
