Daren Tang Re-Elected as WIPO Director General

04/22/2026

Daren Tang Re-Elected as WIPO Director General

On April 21, 2026, at the 67th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Member States decided to appoint Mr. Daren Tang for a second term as Director General of the Organization.

The decision of the General Assembly, WIPO’s highest governing body, follows his nomination by the WIPO Coordination Committee, during its meeting of February 12-13, 2026. Mr. Tang’s mandate will be for six years, running from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2032.

The Republic of Moldova participated in the process of appointing the Director General of WIPO, including as a member state of the Coordination Committee, where it exercised its right to vote in favor of the candidacy of Mr. Daren Tang.

The Republic of Moldova was represented in person by Marin Cebotari, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Moldova to the UN Office in Geneva, with AGEPI representatives participating online in the extraordinary session of the WIPO Assemblies. The delegation’s participation was carried out with full powers, including the right to take part in the process of adopting the decision on the appointment of the Director General of WIPO.

In his message to the Member States, Daren Tang thanked them for their trust and underlined his commitment to continue transforming intellectual property from a technical and legal matter into an essential economic and financial asset that helps drive innovation, creativity and sustainable development.

For his second term, the priorities outlined by the Director General of WIPO primarily aim to strengthen the efficiency of global intellectual property systems, adapt international standards to the accelerated dynamics of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, and leverage intellectual property in addressing global challenges.

Daren Tang, a national of Singapore, is the fifth Director General of WIPO. He took office in 2020, following the approval of his candidacy by the WIPO General Assembly, for a first six-year term, starting on October 1, 2020.

His appointment in 2020 marked a landmark moment for the Organization, taking place in a complex global context generated by the COVID-19 pandemic and involving an adapted procedure, carried out in written format, agreed upon by the Member States.

Mr. Tang’s re-election confirms the confidence of the Member States in his vision and leadership, as well as in the strategic direction promoted at the level of the World Intellectual Property Organization.

AGEPI will continue to actively support WIPO initiatives and contribute to the strengthening of the international intellectual property system, in line with the European integration and economic development objectives of the Republic of Moldova. The constant participation and constructive involvement in WIPO decision-making processes reflects our country’s firm commitment to the promotion and protection of intellectual property rights at the global level.
