On December 16, 2008 Republic of Moldova has deposited its instrument of ratification of the Singapore Treaty on the protection of trademarks. Under the Article 28 (2) of the Treaty it will enter into force three months after the deposit of instruments of accession or ratification by 10 states, that is, the March 16, 2009.
The first 10 states that have deposited instruments of accession and ratification are: Singapore - March 26, 2007, Swiss Confederation - July 6, 2007, Bulgaria - January 21, 2008, Romania - March 25, 2008, Denmark - June 24, 2008, Latvia - September 9, 2008 , Kyrgyzstan - September 12, 2008,, USA - October 1, 2008, Moldova and Australia - December 16, 2008.
The treaty was adopted by Member States of WIPO in Singapore, on March 27, 2006, governing the registration of trademarks and licensing issues. Application of common standards in this area contributes to the granting of equal opportunities to all applicants that invest in trademarks. The normative act takes into account the evolution of media, and the necessity to address the problems of procedure of trademarks, giving the possibility to use electronic communication to conduct the procedures for granting protection of trademarks.
Singapore Treaty creates a dynamic regulatory environment, equipped with an integral mechanism of review, which will answer on the requests of trademarks holders.
