AGEPI at the Oslo Law Enforcement Intellectual Property Crime Conference: Pathways to Solutions

09/28/2023

The State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI) participated on September 25-27, 2023, in the 16th International Law Enforcement Intellectual Property Crime Conference, which took place in Oslo, Norway. The event was organized by INTERPOL, jointly with the Norwegian Police Service and in partnership with UL Standards & Engagement.

This large-scale conference brought together more than 450 participants from 70 countries. The central theme of the Conference, “Pathways to Solutions”, focused on finding innovative and effective solutions to combat intellectual property (IP) crime. Sessions focused on keeping pace with current trends and identifying emerging risks associated with transnational organized intellectual property crime and illicit trade.

During the event, several essential aspects for combating IP crimes were addressed. First, the importance of promoting applied research and technology was emphasized. Special emphasis was placed on the use of immersive learning to train law enforcement officers. This approach took into account the context of rapid technological evolution, in which criminals use more and more sophisticated techniques to commit crimes.

Also, debates and exchange of experiences were organized on the topic of leadership and diversity in teams dedicated to combating IP crime. A central point was the development of teams capable of responding to the increasingly complex challenges of this field.

In addition, special attention was paid to the environmental impact generated by criminal activities, including counterfeiting. Participants explored solutions to reduce this impact and to protect the environment in the context of the fight against intellectual property crime.

The conference delivered numerous networking and capacity building opportunities, showcasing operational best practices. Thus, the event represented a platform for the exchange of ideas and practices in the fight against crimes of this type, considering the current and future challenges in this constantly evolving field.
