Workshop on Intellectual Property for Judges

10/24/2022

Several judges from the Republic of Moldova are participating on October 24-25 in a Workshop in the field of intellectual property. The event is organized by the Commercial Law Development Program of the U.S. Department of Commerce (CLDP), in partnership with the State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI) and the National Institute of Justice (NIJ).

The aim of the workshop is to strengthen knowledge in the field of intellectual property (IP) among the representatives of the justice sector in the Republic of Moldova, as well as to exchange experiences and best practices in the field of enforcement of intellectual property rights (IPRs).

In the opening, Eugeniu Rusu, Director General of AGEPI, welcomed the presence of the judges, noting that their participation in such events gives them the opportunity to enrich their practices regarding the application of intellectual property rights in the courts of the Republic of Moldova.

In her turn, Ecaterina Popa, Director of the National Institute of Justice, appreciated the fruitful collaboration with AGEPI on the promotion of intellectual property among judges, emphasizing that intellectual property is one of the INJ's priorities.

Shaya Tavaf, Attorney Advisor, CLDP, also thanked the Agency for the organization, noting that this workshop is the first event held by the Commercial Law Development Program of the U.S. Department of Commerce in the field of intellectual property in the Republic of Moldova.

On the first day of the event, the invited experts will share their knowledge on topics related to the current situation in the field of IPRs in the Republic of Moldova, the current trends in our country and the USA regarding the adjudication of IP cases, the evaluation of intellectual property, recent developments in the legislation on copyright and related rights of the Republic of Moldova, etc.

On the second day, the judges will examine several case studies on copyright and trademark dispute resolution. Participants will also be familiarized with procedural aspects regarding the calculation of damages in the field of IP.

The organization of this workshop takes place in the context of the Memorandum between AGEPI and NIJ through which both institutions committed to promoting and disseminating knowledge regarding the national system of protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights among employees in the justice sector of the Republic of Moldova.

The CLDP Program is a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce that advances U.S. foreign policy goals in developing and post-conflict countries through commercial legal reforms. This program provides intergovernmental technical assistance by involving experienced regulators, judges, policymakers, business leaders and attorneys from both the public and private sectors.
