The Training Seminar “Challenges, Responsibilities and Implementations of the Competent Authorities of Geographical Indications to Ensure a Sustainable System: From Legal Arrangement to Implementation” took place on August 29, 2022, in the city of Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The seminar was organized within the project “Strengthening Sustainable Food Systems Through Geographical Indications”.
The training seminar was organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The organization of this event took place in the context of the adoption of the law on geographical indications in Uzbekistan (March 2022) and with the aim of presenting the practice of other states, taking over the best practices and applying them in Uzbekistan.
The practice of Turkey and the Republic of Moldova in the field of developing the system of geographical indications was presented during the event. On behalf of AGEPI, as a trainer, Simion Levitchi, head of the Trademarks and Industrial Design Department, participated in the seminar.
The discussions focused on topics such as: the role of signs identifying geographical indications; differences between signs used for geographical indications, trademarks, certification marks; the possibility of registering geographical indications as collective trademarks; development of control and monitoring plans for geographical indications; the practical tools for effective implementation of geographical indications.
